How Is Himalayan Balsam Controlled in Scotland?

Himalayan balsam is an annual, so the whole job is stopping it setting seed. Plants are pulled or cut below the lowest node between June and August, before the pods ripen and fire seed several metres. Seed in the soil stays viable for about two years, so a site needs two or three seasons of follow-up. Work near water is timed and licensed to protect the bank.

What Are the Rules on Himalayan Balsam in Scotland?

In Scotland the Wildlife and Natural Environment (Scotland) Act 2011 makes it an offence to plant Himalayan balsam or cause it to grow in the wild, and SEPA oversees work on riverbanks.
